Some Eye Opening Facts and Figures:
Consultant pharmacists are key members of today’s health care
team. Half of consultant pharmacists surveyed report that their
drug therapy recommendations (most often, discontinuation of
an unnecessary drug) are implemented by physicians more
than 75% of the time.
A recent scientific cost analysis indicates that as many as 120,000
deaths could be prevented and tens of billions of dollars saved
each year in the United States if all pharmacists provided
comprehensive, patient-focused pharmaceutical care services–
the same sorts of services consultant pharmacists have
pioneered and perfected in nursing homes.
Consultant pharmacists’ life-enhancing, cost-saving services aren’t
limited to the nation’s nursing homes. Consultant pharmacists
also work in assisted living and residential care facilities,
psychiatric hospitals, facilities for the mentally retarded,
correctional institutions, hospices—even right in patients’
homes.
